I’m Happy

You smiled and nodded,
when I asked if you were happy,
but the words never came.

Weeks later, you sent
a letter, later
than promised.

I saw pain
in the wine-stained
ink, blurred by tears
that you sought to wipe away.

Smudged words spoke
as if hiding your pain –
“I’m happy” you wrote
down, on the paper
crumpled and worn.

I read and wondered,
how many drafts it took
for you to realise
you were lying to yourself.
